CASILLAS PLEASED WITH WIN
Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said that he is extremely happy that the team managed to score in the final few minutes of the match against Croatia. Spain managed a 1-0 win over Croatia in the final group game, which put them into the quarter-finals of the competition. However, they came extremely close to going out of the competition given that a draw for Croatia would have sent them out of the competition. It would have been almost improbable a few weeks ago, but Spain have not been at their best in the group stages of the competition.
As a result, goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said that it is a huge weight that has been lifted off his shoulders following the 1-0 win. Three teams were going into the final group game knowing that they can make it into the quarter-finals. However, Italy’s comfortable 2-0 win over Republic of Ireland meant that they already secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition. This left for Spain and Croatia to battle it out for the next spot. Spanish winger Jesús Navas scored in the final few minutes of the match to give Spain a victory, which also helped them top the group.
“I think it was a very tense match, but that is normal because it was important to get through to the next round. Croatia were well prepared to face us. They made it very difficult for us to create chances, they defended very well. In the end we were lucky, scoring late on. It felt like a weight off our shoulders,” said Iker Casillas after the match. He has also said that he certainly not worried about facing either England or France in the quarter-final of the competition because both of them are extremely good sides.
